Arkansas bill to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana filed

A bill was filed in the Arkansas Statehouse on Monday, April 1st, that would decriminalize the possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana. Under current law, possession of that amount is a class A misdemeanor. The new bill would make possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana a "violation" subject to a fine of no more than $200. The bill would leave the rest of the existing marijuana possession law in place:

Under 4 oz. is a Class A misdemeanor Under 4 oz. is a Class D felony if the person has 4 or more previous conviction of under 4 oz. possession 4 oz. to 10 lbs. is a Class D felony 10 lbs. to 25 lbs. is a Class C felony 25 lbs. to 100 lbs. is a Class B felony 100 lbs. to 500 lbs. is a Class A felony.

It is important to note that the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Program allows certified patients to buy no more than 2.5 ounces of medical marijuana every two weeks.
